Camping on Straddie

Couple walking, Stradbroke Island

There are a number of campsites on South Stradbroke Island and it is possible to camp all year round. It is wise to check ahead as many campsites do not have power and you may need to bring your own drinking water. Although fires are permitted you must be sure to use only the designated fire rings for your fire. Wood can be purchased from the ranger at a minimal cost.

There are amenities blocks at most campsites and a few do have children’s playgrounds. All fuel for boats and jet skis etc can be purchased from the Runaway Bay Marina before you leave for the island. Although there is a convenience store on South Straddie it is wise to bring most of what you will need with you.

Make sure you have all your camping equipment included either battery operated or gas lights with plenty of gas cylinders. You will need to bring your own barbeque and make sure you have adequate drinking water. In keeping with the environmental aspect of South Stradbroke Island make sure you dispose of all your rubbish properly. It you cannot find any bins place all rubbish in a garbage bag and take it off the island with you.

Pets are not allowed on the South Stradbroke Island although you can take your pet onto North Stradbroke they are not permitted in any of the campsite. Bookings must be made for all sites and a permit is required for beach camping. A permit is required for 4WD vehicles using the beach. A 4WD Annual Permit costs $37. Cars and four wheel drives are not permitted on South Stradbroke.

North Stradbroke Island is larger than South Stradbroke Island with some campgrounds having cabins for hire as well. There are more places where you can buy groceries, fresh meat and vegetables as well as other supplies you may run out of. Clothing can be light in summer but in the cooler months the breeze can be quite fresh and jumpers are necessary as are warmer blankets.
